　 Big Fish is directed by Tim Burton, whose films such as Edward Scissor hands , Batman and Alice in Wonderland give us lasting impressions. It is a tale of how a son, William Bloom, tries to piece together a picture of the life of his father, Edward, based on the facts he can uncover. Edward is an inveterate storyteller, with a penchant for embellishing events from his own life. But now Edward is dying and William must come to terms with all aspects of his father -----the real and the imaginary. In the process, he discovers that some of Edward"s supposed fantasies aren"t as outlandish as he supposed.

　From my perspective, I believe that there are two stories. One is the legend

　of

　the

　father ’ s

　life

　told

　by

　the

　protagonist,

　the

　other

　is

　the

　story

　in the real life, regarding the relationship between the father and the son, told by the director. Though the whole movie spends a lot of time to tell the former story, the major meaning, I think, is revealed in the second story, the real story.

　 The former story dramatizes Edward"s most impressive stories: how, as a boy, can he have the courage to approach a witch and asks to see his future; how, as a young man, can he discover the secret town of Spectre, and meet the love of his life, Sandy. There are other tales, too - of giants, lycanthropes, armed robberies that don"t go as planned and Siamese sisters. In addition to telling a wonderful fairy tale, Tim Burton attaches

　 the importance to emphasizing the need to keep some element of magic and mystery in a world that has become coldly cynical.

　 While the other story about the father and the son is quite different. For William, he is really unwilling to listen to those stories told by his father again and again when he grows up because i t’ s too ridiculous to be accepted. To his view, his father is nothing but a teller of tall tales. And what even more ridiculous is people around his father all love those stories even if they know it ’ s not quite real. So William moves away and has not talked to his father for 3 years. But finally, he comes back when he finds his father is ill badly. And at that time, he begins to travel the place where his father traveled, such as the town of Spectre, little by little, he begins to trust his father and the relationship between his father and he is rebuilt. In the end, Edward Bloom earns love and respect from his son.

　By telling the fairy tales, I think Edward, on the one hand, tries to make his own life extraordinary, on the other hand, tries to fuse the truth and the fairy tales to cover the darkness of the real world and provide the son with a more colorful world. There is no need to figure out what is the truth and what is not because those covered by some fancy tales must be something stuffy and unacceptable. What we need to know is these stories told by our fathers are full of love and they deserve respect and trust.

　Then it comes to the symbolism. What does the big fish which appears

　several times in the movie exactly mean? At the very beginning of the

　movie, we see the big fish swimming in the water along with the

　narratage: “ Here are some fish that cannot be caught. It"s not that they"re

　faster or stronger than other fish. They"re just touched by something

　extra.” Actually, the fish is a man. And the big fish in the small town is a

　man of big ambitions in the small town. That man is the main character,

　In reality, to most of us, father is omnipotent and a hero in our heart when we were children. He can lift us up by his powerful arms and answer all the questions we are curious about. Then, we gradually find he is not as powerful as he was and he is not important any more. He has the troubles as much as we have and he begins to fade away in our lives little by little. In the most of time, we are smarter and more powerful than our old fathers, we don’t want to live the ways our fathers did. While one day, we have a baby and come to the stage of our fathers, we begin to realize our fathers are still heroes. We begin to wonder who the old man is and what happens in his whole life. Here are several sentences at the end of the movie and I think they can well illuminate the relationships I have described above. “ Have you ever hears a joke so many times you have forgotten why it ’ s funny? And then you hear it again and suddenly it ’ s new.

　 Edward Bloom. Through the adventure of Edward Bloom, the movie tries

　to send the audiences a message that if you are ambitious enough and can

　adhere to your aims all the time, and are not induced by the tiny benefits,

　you then can swim in the ocean like the big fish to pursue the happiness

　of life.
